Pro Wrestling’s Top Stars, Including The Rock and Triple H, Pay Tribute to Bray Wyatt

Renowned WWE luminary Bray Wyatt, celebrated for his innovative storytelling in the world of professional wrestling, tragically passed away at the age of 36 on Thursday. The distressing news was relayed via social media by WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

Windham Rotunda, whose real name graced his birth certificate, had been on a hiatus from WWE for several months as he grappled with an undisclosed health concern. His affiliation with WWE commenced in 2009, with the exception of an unexpected departure in 2021 and 2022. Rotunda made a highly anticipated return to WWE in September of the prior year, captivating audiences with a cryptic and mysterious storyline, bolstering television ratings.

Levesque conveyed the somber message on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “Just received a call from WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda who informed us of the tragic news that our WWE family member for life Windham Rotunda — also known as Bray Wyatt — unexpectedly passed earlier today. His family is in our thoughts, and we ask that everyone respects their need for privacy right now.

Wrestling was a generational calling for Rotunda, hailing from a family steeped in the sport. His father, Mike, achieved fame in WWE as Irwin R. Schyster and also wrestled under his real name and as Michael Wallstreet in other promotions. Rotunda’s uncle, Barry Windham, stood as one of the most esteemed wrestlers of the 1980s and early 1990s, known for his tenure with the prestigious Four Horsemen stable. In addition, Rotunda’s brother, Taylor, once grappled under the moniker Bo Dallas in WWE.

Windham Rotunda was married to former WWE ring announcer JoJo Offerman, and together they had two children. Rotunda also had two other children from a previous marriage. His wrestling accolades included two WWE Universal Championships and a former WWE Championship.

Rotunda’s journey in WWE commenced under the persona Husky Harris in the developmental program. However, he eventually evolved into Bray Wyatt, a maniacal cult leader from a sinister swampland who lured followers with a devilish charisma. Together with his Wyatt Family, which included Erick Rowan and the late Luke Harper (Jonathan Huber), they garnered popularity in NXT before making a high-profile debut on WWE’s main roster in 2014.

Rotunda earned a reputation as one of the most gifted performers on the roster, particularly in his storytelling prowess on the microphone. His catchphrase, “follow the buzzards,” and the haunting lyrics of “he’s got the whole world in his hands” became iconic. During his entrances, fans would illuminate the arena with cellphone lights as eerie music enveloped the venue.

In 2019, Rotunda underwent a metamorphosis, embracing the supernatural persona of The Fiend. Clad in a horrifying clown-like mask reminiscent of a horror movie, The Fiend became his dark alter ego while Bray Wyatt continued to appear in kid-friendly segments known as Firefly Funhouse. These creative and intricate ideas largely emanated from Rotunda himself. The Fiend was a polarizing character due to its near-invulnerability in the ring but undeniably represented an inventive leap and one of the most captivating elements of WWE television at the time.

Rotunda reentered the WWE landscape last year, adopting the persona of the former Bray Wyatt, a character seemingly haunted by past demons such as The Fiend and Uncle Howdy. The storyline was still unfolding when, in February, Rotunda was forced to step away from television due to health complications.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson paid tribute to the late wrestling luminary, expressing, “Always had tremendous respect and love for him and the Rotunda family. I adored his presence, his in-ring work, his promos, and his connection to the WWE community. Character that is very uncommon, cool, and difficult to produce in the wild world of professional wrestling.
